Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

Families take note: San Jose is a great west coast getaway if you have kids. The Tech Museum is a scene stealer with amazing interactive exhibits courtesy of its Silicone Valley neighbors. The Children’s Discovery Museum gets high marks from toddlers and preschoolers who can’t get enough of the bubble room, and Winchester Mystery House is just the right amount of mystery and kitsch for kids and adults alike.

There are sweet treats at Psycho Donuts, wet fun at Raging Waters, and rides galore at nearby Great America.

East Coast Getaways for Memorial Day

Thinking about a last minute road trip for the holiday weekend?

If you’re on the East Coast, the weather’s looking a bit cloudy and cool — the perfect excuse for a city break.

Recently, I checked out new hotels in Baltimore and Philadelphia that have enough going on inside that you can plan a staycation, or use the hip rooms as a base to explore the city (my picks: the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore and the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia for adults; the National Aquarium in Baltimore and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia if you have kids in tow).

Sweet Tooth Travels: Date Shakes in the Desert

Palm Springs might be a  post-modern haven of architectural and culinary delights, but when I visit the desert, I head straight out of town to Palm Desert answer the siren song of a roadside oddity: Shields Date Garden, where you’ll find both the 50s era film “The Sex Life of the Date” and the sweet, frozen concoction known simply as a “date shake”.

World famous date shakes, yum

How sweet is a date shake? The first sip is reminiscent of sugar-coated Easter Peeps and a sack of Halloween candy blended together. And it’s cold, Arctic cold, brain-freeze cold.

So what’s the draw? The date shake, when imbibed in the desert air, under the date palms and the blistering sun quickly, becomes the stuff of milkshake dreams – the date’s initial sweetness fades to a funky earthy fruitiness, the extreme iciness becomes the perfect foil to the 100+ heat, and before you know it, the whole creamy concoction is gone.

Baltimore Bites

The Ravens are headed to the Super Bowl, and I’ve had Baltimore, especially its great eats, on the brain all week.

Crab meat, Berger cookies, happy spoons….

Mardi Gras Like a Rock Star (for only $25,000)

Always wanted to go to NOLA for Mardi Gras and do it up in style?

Check out this package: you  hit New Orleans right in time for Mardi Gras (February 11), stay in a suite at the luxe Ritz Carlton in the French Quarter, get hooked up with costumes and beads for the parade, AND, wait for it,  ride on Harry Connick Jr‘s parade float.

It’s that last part that made me look twice.

In fact, I was IN, until I saw the price tag: a cool $25,000.

Oh well.

Anyone else have a desire to throw beads and a have a HUGE wad of dough burning a hole in their pocket?

Here’s the details from our friends at the Ritz Carlton New Orleans:

With the Lundi Gras Ride of a Lifetime package, two guests will have the chance to ride in Harry Connick, Jr.’s Krewe of Orpheus 2013 parade on Lundi Gras,Monday, February 11th!
