Sweet Tooth Travels: Date Shakes in the Desert

Standard

Palm Springs might be a  post-modern haven of architectural and culinary delights, but when I visit the desert, I head straight out of town to Palm Desert answer the siren song of a roadside oddity: Shields Date Garden, where you’ll find both the 50s era film “The Sex Life of the Date” and the sweet, frozen concoction known simply as a “date shake”.

How sweet is a date shake? The first sip is reminiscent of sugar-coated Easter Peeps and a sack of Halloween candy blended together. And it’s cold, Arctic cold, brain-freeze cold.

So what’s the draw? The date shake, when imbibed in the desert air, under the date palms and the blistering sun quickly, becomes the stuff of milkshake dreams – the date’s initial sweetness fades to a funky earthy fruitiness, the extreme iciness becomes the perfect foil to the 100+ heat, and before you know it, the whole creamy concoction is gone.
